Our Top Three Favorite CPG Activations of 2024

You might be wondering: what on earth is an activation? People use the term to cover everything from handing out sample cups at Costco to elaborate installations like an Emily in Paris inspired boulangerie.

At ROOT, we’re fascinated by activations that actually activate – the ones that engage the senses, spark emotions, and draw people into a story. Studies like this one from Deloitte show that emotional engagement directly correlates with increased sales and brand loyalty. Whether it’s creating excitement, surprise, or nostalgia, the goal is to make people feel something.

Below are a few of our favorite activations from this past year – each one a standout for the way it captivates, involves, and delivers a meaningful experience. At ROOT we focus on relationships and storytelling, not one-way selling or forgettable sampling. The best activations go beyond surface-level interactions to foster authentic connections.

Primal Kitchen’s Pinterest Multi-City Pop-Up

Condiments brand Primal Kitchen recently partnered with Pinterest to create a unique multi-city pop-up series to blend culinary experiences with lifestyle inspiration.

Spanning three cities, visitors watched live cooking demonstrations and sampled Primal Kitchen’s range of health-focused products while experiencing an immersive Pinterest-inspired “kitschy kitchen.”

The food space is one of Pinterest’s top verticals and the platform has been key in connecting brands with Gen Z. This year, Pinterest has seen searches for “clean food” grow by 9,794%.

We’re excited to continue watching brand partnerships with this platform and the growing trend of integrating digital platforms with real-world experiences.

Lucy Score and Club Crackers Book Club House

Bestselling author Lucy Score teamed up with Club Crackers to create a unique pop-up experience called the Book Club House. To bring her Riley Thorn mystery series to life, Club Crackers created an interactive experience at a local mansion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where the books take place.

With character-themed rooms, a wine fridge of butter wines, Club Crackers for snacking, and a locally inspired itinerary (tarot card readings, scenic hikes, local orchards), the partnership is truly immersive.

We love this partnership for its ability to create connections in a unique way with every detail carefully coordinated. Plus, with a house that sleeps 8, it’s a memorable experience for those lucky enough to win a weekend stay!

Samsung and Vogue: The Movement of Design

This pop-up experience celebrated the kick-off of New York Fashion Week and the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. The event showcased the innovative intersection of fashion and tech, featuring up-and-coming designer Colin LoCascio.

Visitors explored cutting-edge fashion designs alongside Samsung’s Galaxy AI products. The latest Samsung Galaxy devices utilized augmented reality fashion designs, which allowed users to digitally try on clothing pieces. Additionally, the event featured AI-powered photo opportunities, where attendees could take high-quality, enhanced selfies and videos using Samsung’s cutting-edge cameras that offered integrated AI features for optimal lighting, editing, and customization options.

Offering an interactive, gallery-like experience, this partnership was newsworthy, garnered media attention across multiple publications, and provided a glimpse into the future of wearable tech and how technology can elevate fashion.

These standout activations demonstrate how important it is to align brand values with engaging consumer experiences. Whether through immersive storytelling or innovative product offerings, the most memorable activations are those that not only captivate consumers but also connect with them. Looking to create impactful activations that drive engagement and loyalty? We realized AI would transform PR when we saw how it prioritizes earned media in searches. A Muck Rack report analyzed over 1 million AI-generated responses and found 96% of cited links came from content created by PR/corp comms teams. Earned media placements are heavily prioritized by AI search engines because they are seen as highly credible, third-party validation sources. Unlike paid ads or brand-owned content, AI systems rely on earned media to provide objective and trustworthy answers to user queries.
